Program Format

Practical, instructor-led training designed to help you build skills through demonstrations, supervised practice and projects.

40 Instructional Hours

40 instructional hours per level and 120 hours across all three levels.

Carpentry Practical Level 1

Carpentry Fundamentals & Tool Skills

Build a strong practical foundation.

Start building practical carpentry skills through guided workshop training. Learn how to work safely, measure accurately, select materials, use common tools and complete a small wooden project. This course introduces the habits and techniques needed for further carpentry training.

1 Workshop Safety & PPE +
Recognize hazards, select PPE, handle materials safely, check tools and keep the work area organized.
2 Measurement & Trade Math +
Practise fractions, metric and imperial measurements, basic angles, area calculations and accurate marking.
3 Materials & Fasteners +
Identify lumber and sheet products, recognize common defects and select nails, screws and adhesives for simple tasks.
4 Hand & Power Tools +
Practise using tapes, squares, levels, drills, drivers and saws safely under instructor supervision.
5 Drawings & Cutting Lists +
Read a simple sketch, interpret dimensions, prepare a cutting list and organize a project sequence.
6 Cutting, Joining & Assembly +
Make basic cuts, drill pilot holes, practise simple joints and assemble components using suitable fasteners.
7 Basic Framing & Accuracy +
Identify wall and floor components; assemble a small training frame and check square, level and plumb.
8 Practical Project & Review +
Build a toolbox, shelf or simple bench; inspect dimensions, assembly quality and safe working habits.

Residential Framing & Building Envelope

Build practical residential framing skills.

Develop your framing skills through practical training sections and construction demonstrations. Build on Level 1 by reading residential drawings, laying out framing, assembling floor and wall sections, and exploring how openings and exterior layers work together to manage moisture.

1 Drawings, Layout & Planning +
Interpret plans and details, prepare material lists, establish reference lines and explore relevant building-code references.
2 Foundations & Formwork Basics +
Identify footings, slabs and foundation components; practise laying out and assembling a small formwork mock-up.
3 Floor Framing +
Identify joists, beams, rim boards and subflooring; assemble a training section and check spacing and alignment.
4 Wall Framing & Openings +
Lay out plates and studs, frame a door or window opening, and identify headers and supporting components.
5 Roof & Stair Fundamentals +
Explore roof components, roof pitch, stair rise and run, and load paths through demonstrations and small models.
6 Sheathing, Bracing & Connections +
Practise installing sheathing on training frames and identify bracing and connections shown on drawings.
7 Windows, Doors & Moisture Control +
Practise fitting and shimming units; demonstrate flashing, drainage and air-barrier continuity on a mock-up.
8 Integrated Framing Project +
Complete a framed wall section with an opening, sheathing and weather-protection details.

Finish Carpentry & Renovation Projects

Develop precision and practical problem-solving skills.

Develop precision and practical problem-solving skills for residential finishing and renovation work. Practise interior installation tasks, plan materials and work sequences, and bring several skills together in a finished workshop project with instructor feedback.

1 Renovation Planning & Estimating +
Review a simple scope, measure the work area, estimate materials, sequence tasks and identify work needing specialist assessment.
2 Interior Doors & Hardware +
Practise fitting a prehung door in a training opening, shimming, adjusting clearances and installing basic hardware.
3 Trim, Casing & Baseboards +
Measure and cut trim, practise mitres and coped joints, and fit components for a neat finished appearance.
4 Cabinets, Shelving & Blocking +
Lay out a small installation; practise finding backing, levelling, aligning and fastening cabinets or shelves.
5 Flooring & Transitions +
Assess a training substrate, plan a small floating-floor layout, make cuts and fit transition pieces.
6 Drywall & Surface Preparation +
Cut and fix drywall on a mock-up, practise basic patching and joint treatment, and prepare surfaces for finishing.
7 Repairs & Workmanship Checks +
Practise trim and hardware repairs; diagnose gaps and alignment problems and improve fit and finish.
8 Final Renovation Project +
Complete an interior mock-up combining a door, trim and another finishing task; review sequence and final quality.
