A Direct Route to Mastery

The Red Seal endorsement is recognized across Canada as proof of excellence. Challenging the exam is the fastest way for experienced professionals to earn it.

The “Challenge” pathway is a formal application submitted to SkilledTradesBC (formerly ITA). It bypasses the traditional four-year apprenticeship model by recognizing your prior on-the-job training.

“At Imperial Skills Academy, we don’t just teach the trade; we teach you how to pass the Canadian technical exam, bridging the gap between field skill and academic requirement.”

Why Candidates Choose Challenge?

Eligibility & Prerequisites

The application is strict. Understanding the requirements is the first step toward approval.

The "1.5x Hours" Rule

Most trades require you to prove work hours totaling 1.5 times the length of a standard apprenticeship. For a 4-year trade, this typically means 9,000 to 12,000 hours of verifiable work.

Verified Skill Set

It's not just about time. You must demonstrate that you have performed a certain percentage of the "Scope of Practice" for the trade, verified by previous supervisors or statutory declarations.

International Candidates

International experience counts! We help newcomers navigate the transition of their foreign credentials into the Canadian SkilledTradesBC system.

Imperial Skills Academy provides specialized assistance in auditing your documentation before you submit to SkilledTradesBC.

The Path to Certification

A structured 6-step journey from preparation to passing.

Initial Assessment & Consultation

Meet with our experts to audit your hours and skills. We determine if you meet the 1.5x rule and identify potential gaps in your theoretical knowledge.

Documentation Prep & Audit

We help you gather employer letters and sign-offs. We ensure your application is technically correct to prevent a 'Return to Sender' rejection from the authorities.

SkilledTradesBC Submission

Your formal application is submitted for review. While authorities process your file (which can take 6-12 weeks), we begin your technical training.

Imperial Exam Prep Program

Intensive training focusing on Canadian Code (CEC, NPC, BCBC), technical math, and blueprint reading. We use exclusive exam banks and mock tests.

Exam Approval & Scheduling

Once SkilledTradesBC approves your challenge, you'll receive an invitation to write. We schedule your test at a convenient location in BC.

The Red Seal Exam

Write your Interprovincial Exam. With our 92% pass rate, you'll enter the test room with confidence. Pass and receive your Journeyperson Certificate.

Imperial Preparation Strategies

The exam isn’t just about what you do in the field. It’s about theory, calculation, and Canadian codes.

Code Mastery

Deep dive into the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) or National Plumbing Code. Learn how to navigate the code book quickly during the exam.

Gap Closing

Field experience often skips theory. We cover the physics, math, and chemistry behind your trade that the exam expects you to know.

Blueprint Reading

A major exam focus. We train you to interpret complex industrial and commercial drawings precisely.

Timed Mock Exams

Practice makes perfect. Access our vault of thousands of real-world practice questions under timed pressure.

Levels 1, 2, and 3 Challenges

Not eligible for the full certification challenge yet? We support candidates in challenging individual levels. This allows you to jump ahead in your apprenticeship without needing to attend full-term schooling for every level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common concerns for Red Seal Challenge candidates.

Can I challenge if my experience is from another country?

Yes! SkilledTradesBC recognizes international work experience. You will need to provide notarized translations of your employment records and possibly proof of competency from your home country.

Candidates usually have three attempts. If you fail the first time, we provide a remedial review session to identify specifically where you struggled and help you prepare for the second attempt.
From initial assessment to certification, it typically takes 4 to 8 months. This depends on how quickly you gather your documents and the current processing speed of SkilledTradesBC.

There are application fees paid to SkilledTradesBC and tuition fees for the prep course at Imperial. Many candidates find the investment pays for itself within 3 months of higher-wage work.

One of the biggest benefits of the Challenge pathway is that you DO NOT need an employer sponsor to sign up for the exam, provided you meet the hour requirements yourself.
